Happy Birthdays and Some Cuteness

Well there is lots to talk about today on this first day
back after the Christmas Holidays, but before we go anywhere, there is an
important announcement first. Happy Birthday to Momma C! That’s right, the lady
who bends over backwards to take care of her ‘baby’ is another year more
awesome. Thanks for everything you have done and continue to do, day in and day
out. Now prepare for a cuteness explosion. Happy ‘belated’ Birthday to my
Sister! December and March are packed birthday months for my family and I’m
happy to send my wishes to you both.
Now it’s not often that I get called for ‘snaking’ a WOD
(actually I’ve never have been), but that sort of happened today. Now over the
Christmas break I spent a few nights sleeping on the floor. Needless to say,
I’m not designed for that and I was having some back and hip related issues. As
I hummed and hawed, I decided to cancel @CrossFitCanuck at about 830a (to give
anyone on the waitlist fair warning). At 930a Coach Jillian BBM’d me inquiring
as to why I was snaking the WOD. Even though I explained about my back, I
started to feel guilty and packed up to go in.
Warm-up
800m Row
2 Rounds of
5 Wallball (10lbs)
5 Inch Worms (with a Push-up)
5 Burpees
Originally I was going to just do mobility, but as I warmed
up I started to feel better. 15 minutes of smashing a lacrosse ball into my low
back and hip may have had something to do with it. I even managed to do a PVC
Pass Through for the first time in FOREVER without pain or seizing up. Crazy
excited! We worked up to a 1RM Turkish Getup and then got ready for a mini WOD.
10 minute CAP, 10 Getups per side (5R, 5L, 5R, 5L). I managed to get to 45lbs,
but I was sure I could go heavier (ran out of time). I even managed to use a
15lb bar on my sore left shoulder without failure (if I could have done a
cartwheel, there would have been several). Finished in a time of 6m28s.
Karen (7 minute CAP)
150 Wallball (14lbs)
For each rep not completed, 1 minute in the following AMRAP
(5 minute CAP)
AMRAP
5 Push-ups
10 Heavy Russians (70lbs)
5 Burpees
I felt confident going into Karen, especially since I wasn’t
working at RX (20lbs). Once we started though, I ran into trouble. The first 25
were fine, then the wheels came off. I finished with 100 reps. Bah. Stupid
AMRAP on deck.  3 full rounds complete
plus 2 Heavy Russians. I was really gassed, but also incredibly glad that I
came. Thanks for the push Tavia. That’s the sign of a great coach folks. They
know when to give the little push to get the best out of you.
BWOD
50 GHD Sit-ups
50 GHD Back Extensions
5 Beat Pull-ups (5 Beat Swings from the floor into a
Pull-up)
5 Deep Rig Squats
Hip Stretches
Glute Stretches
Now I spoke about a 1RM Bench Press in support of Carm. I
did some work at the end of class to see where I was. Considering I haven’t
worked the bench in a while, I was nervous. I needed to add 40lbs to my 1RM to
get near my body weight. With Tavia spotting and after a clumsy first attempt I
hit 240lbs, which was a 15lb PR for me. I still need to find 25lbs, but even if
I don’t hit it before Tuesday, I will keep working.
As I close up today, I want to share with you my favorite
gift from this holiday season. My Sister made me a custom mug (pictured below)
and it might be the coolest thing I have ever received.  The part that I like the best (besides the
Harry Potter Quote) is the ‘Inspire’ on the inside. It just reminds me to work
harder everyday and to be better.

You are pretty inspiring Bernie. You are also right when you talk about how great your sister is 🙂 I am so happy that you have found this motivation and groove. Thanks for letting us follow along in your journey!

    1. Thanks April! It's surprising how something really difficult can seem easier when you really enjoy it and have good people with you.
